Honey Bees Making a Start Beekeeping for All
Knowing honey bees, and having the knowledge for their management, are the two most important factors in making a start in the business of beekeeping. The knowledge should be obtained first or, at least, gaining it should keep pace with any increase in the numbers of honey bees. As in any business, it’s the same with bee-keeping, your need to have a broad and deep knowledge of the subject to succeed in this line of work. So many people fail in different kinds of business because they start it with only a narrow or superficial knowledge of their chosen profession. A very good way to gain the knowledge is working with an experienced and successful bee-keeper. This is one of the quickest ways of learning bee-keeping; and, if the teacher is competent, it can be a very enjoyable experience.
The beginner is not always able to get the best as an instructor, it is therefore, a good idea to supplement such instruction by a course of reading, and thus be able to make comparisons and discuss the instructor’s methods in the light of those procedures used by others. In fact, I am inclined to think that a thorough course of reading is the most desirable first step that can be taken by a prospective bee-keeper. Having done this, the next step is to subscribe to a honey beekeeping magazine. At this stage a season with an expert bee-keeper would be of great value, when the reading will enable the learner to use the information, and see the reason for things instead of being simply an imitator, following blindly in the footsteps of his teacher.
Many people who now keep honey bees never had any formal training. Many have become interested in honey bees from the capture of a stray swarm. Neighbouring bee-keepers would be visited, books or magazines borrowed or bought, improved hives and methods adopted, and, as the honey bees increased, so did the enthusiasm and interest, until, finally, the honey bees received more time and attention than did the regular business. Then bee-keeping eventually become a speciality or the sole business.
When a person has decided to embark on a bee-keeping venture as a business, they should learn the business thoroughly before investing extensively. No hard and fast rules can be laid down, so much depending upon circumstances. A young man with no established business would do well to pass one or two seasons in the company of some experienced bee-keeper, as has been already suggested, while a more experienced person already in business, with a family to support, may find it advisable to move into bee-keeping gradually, reading and studying as his honey bees’ increase. Whatever the method employed, let the work be thorough; and, especially, be sure to get plenty of actual experience before venturing into honey beekeeping as a business.
On occasions, a person already has some honey bees when he decides to become a full-time bee-keeper. Perhaps he never formally makes any such decision. He captures a stray swarm, and saves the honey bees, and the stock increases with such wonderful speed that the owner becomes a bee-keeper of substance and scarcely realizes it. This amazing speed with which honey bees increase is one strong argument in favour of a person securing a few colonies and building them up into an apiary instead of buying a large number of colonies at the beginning. By rearing queens that will supply the newly made colonies with brood, and you furnishing them with full sheets of comb foundation, the amount by which honey bees can increase in a favourable season is something almost beyond belief. Just how or where the first colonies come from may well be considered.
Sometimes the person who has steady work, and a good income, can buy honey bees and in the hives that they intend to use. If the honey bees and hives can be obtained locally, from a reliable bee-keeper, so much the better. Of course, there are instances in which a person has more time than money, or there may be a trace of the opportunist in their make-up, and, in either case, the hunting of honey bees, or the putting-out of decoy hives to catch stray swarms, will appeal to them. In those parts of the country where many honey bees are kept, as in Colorado or California, there is no difficulty in catching swarms in decoy hives; in fact, there is difficulty in keeping swarms out of chimneys and the walls of buildings. While out riding one day a man in Colorado, pointed out one house where the walls were covered with five colonies.
He used ordinary boxes instead of hives, and put them pretty high up in tall trees, as a good hive, easily accessible, is quite likely to be stolen. A piece of old black comb is fastened inside the hive or box, and the hive or box is firmly fastened to the tree so that it is not to be easily blown down, a position being chosen where the hive will be in the shade. A tree on the edge of the woods should be chosen, because, when a swarm reaches the woods, it at once begins a search for a suitable hollow in which to make its home. This is sometimes done in advance by worker bees when foraging. The hives or boxes are examined at least once a week, more often if there is time, and when one is found to be occupied by honey bees the hive or box is removed and another put in its place.
Honey bees are also found by walking through the woods in the swarming season. After the honey bees have been found, then the next task is getting them out of the tree and into a hive. Sometimes it is possible to shake them from a light branch into a box, if they are located on a large limb, you might need to cut off the portion where they are located, and lower it by means of a rope. Having captured the honey bees they need to be transferred from the box to a hive. Frames with drawn comb should be put in the hive. A white cloth or canvas should be placed in front of the hive and the honey bees shaken onto it. Make sure there is a slight incline up to the hive entrance. If the hive is left on the spot for several hours, perhaps until dusk, nearly all of the live honey bees will go into the hive.
As said at the beginning, if a person has and a reasonable income they might find it more satisfactory to buy honey bees in a hive; but if they have the time and inclination to get a start by hunting honey bees, or by putting up decoy hives, then this should help them to do it.

3 Common Honey Bee Types
Maybe you are interested in beekeeping or perhaps you just want to know more about honey bees. In either case learning about the different types of bees can help in identifying which bees are more suites for beekeeping than others. Effectively, all honey bees cannot be domesticated. Truly, certain bees don’t tolerate a lot of disturbance while others do. Within this article I hope to give you some indication about 3 common honey bees’ types as well as the two types of bees as far as behavioral differences are concerned.
Social or Solitary
There are effectively two known types of bees if one considers the behavioral dimension. In fact, there are solitary bees and social bees. What are solitary bees and what are social bees? Solitary bees are bees that do not live in a colony. ON the other hand, social bees are bees that do the contrary, meaning that the queen the workers and the drones live all in a colony.
Disturbance Level
Now that we have mentioned the previous types of bees as far as behavior is concerned, it can be remarked that bees also differ in their tolerance of disturbances. In fact, certain colonies may abandon their hives because of disturbances. However, the level of disturbances tolerated by bees varies. Some bees can tolerate more disturbances than others.
One is The Apis Florae
With that being said, let’s concentrate on social bees and introduce 4 common honey bees’ types. First of beginning with bees that don’t tolerate a lot of disturbance we have the apis florae. As mentioned earlier, if the apis florae feels disturbed it is likely to leave its hive. Bees from this type are characterized by a smaller size when compared to other honey bees. Moreover it can be said of the apis florae that they build single comb hive and are generally found in forest as well as in lush, areas of farming.
Talking About the Apis Dorsata
Secondly, The rock bee or apis dorsata is another type of honeybee. It is characterized by a bigger when compared to the others honey bees. Nonetheless, the apis dorsata shares some similarities with the apis florae or dwarf bee. Effectively, the rock bee also may abandon its hive because of disturbances. Additionally, the apis dorsata, construct single comb hives like the apis florae. Their hive can also be found suspended like those of the dwarf bees. Having the hive suspended 5 meters above the ground can serve as a protection against honey predators of a larger size.
And, the Apis Cerena
In the third position comes the apis cerena, which differs particularly from the dwarf and rock bees in the fact that the apis cerena can live and be raised in man-made beehives. Moreover, the apis cerena build their hives differently. Effectively instead of the single comb hives particular to the two other honey bees types, here we have the parallel comb hives. Concerning the size of these bees, because the apis cerena can be found in countries with a variety of climates, a single size for this type of bees cannot be given. What is the link between the countries climates and the size of the bees? In fact, the climate seems to have an influence on the size of the bees. Consequently, due because of the variety of places with diverse climates where the oriental honey bee can be found, the bees also have different sizes.
This is just a preview of what can actually be learned about bees and beekeeping in general. As mentioned earlier, bees are known to either be social or solitary. Regarding the fours common honey bees types, were included the apis florae, the rock bee or apis dorsata, the apis mellifera and the oriental honey bee or apis cerena.

All these covers are clinically tested in the laboratories and ensure that the bugs or mites cannot chew through them and the zippers are self locking ones which bar them completely from coming out. The fabric used is generally polyester, nylon or cotton, which are quite comfortable and can be easily machine washed and reused. Moreover, they are water-proof which is quite advantageous. Urethane membrane which is laminated to the cover fabric gives an added protection against the mites. These bed bug mattress cover and dust mite cover prevents all the bed bugs and dust mites from making infestations in our pillows and mattresses and also forms a protection layer against the already exiting mites and bugs; the exiting ones remain trapped inside the covers.
Many researchers have proved that these dust mite cover or bed bug mattress cover is an effective preventive measure against the mites and allergens. According to a recent study if a cover with a 246 thread count and pore size somewhere between 2 to 10 in the order of microns can block almost 99% of dust mites and works equally well on bed bugs. Such a high percentage is a good enough reason for you to invest in some good quality bed bug cover and dust mite cover. The pore size being as less as 2-10 micron ensures that the dust mites would not come out. Whereas the bed bugs are much larger compared to dust mites, which means they have even lesser chances of seeping out.
Purchasing a bed bug mattress cover or dust mite cover is fine but only when you pick the right one. First and foremost check the pore size; the smaller the size the better it is as it would hold the fabric more tightly against the bugs and mites. The zipper is equally important. It should not rust or break off after a number of washes. A fabric that gives you ultimate comfort is the right fabric for you. Although there are a variety of them available, go for a simple as well as tested one, which can take repetitive washes of temperatures over 140 degree Celsius that kills 100% mites and 96% bugs(like cotton or polyester). Everyday technology is creating something new but it is always best to settle with the safer option.

This article was to be titled ‘Winning the battle against Dust Mites’, however, the house dust mite is such a resilient opponent that outright victory will never be an option. So, what can we do to keep these fearless little creatures to a minimum?
Dust mites are too tiny to see with the naked eye, you could fit at least 5000 on the head of a pin! Their small size does not mean their impact is insignificant as they are a major cause of skin conditions and asthma. Reducing the number of dust mites in the home is an important step to making your life easier should you suffer from any allergies.
Dust mites feed off of human and animal dead skin cells which are in abundance around our homes, regardless of whether you have a pet or not. They can be found on any surface on which there is dust but have a particular liking for warm and cosy area such as beds, carpets and most types of upholstery. Keeping these areas as clean as possible will help prevent the growth of dust mites to a minimum.
Your first step in the battle against the mite is to clean every surface in the house. Methodically work your way throughout the house tackling each room one at a time. An organised plan of attack means no area will be accidently left unclean.
Begin your efforts in the bedroom to achieve the most damage against the dust mite invaders as the pesky creatures love the warmth and humidity that is found in the bedroom. We spend a huge proportion of our lives sleeping so it makes sense that our beds will be a dust mite playground of dead skin and bacteria. Start by removing all the sheets and bedding and vacuuming your mattress, especially the base and head of the bed. Change and wash your pillowcases, sheets, and under blankets on a high temperature setting ( 130°F to 140°F). Clean all flat surfaces in the bedroom to remove dust. Be sure to focus on the carpet in your bedroom, as this is another great breeding place for mites.
