The wing of a fruit fly, viewed against a white background, looks very ordinary. It is transparent, with no obvious colours except for some small brownish spots. But looks can be deceptive. If you put the wing in front of a black background, it suddenly explodes in a kaleidoscope of colour. Oranges, blues, greens, violets – virtually the entire rainbow dances across the wing, except for red.

A French scientist called Claude Charles Goureau first noticed these vivid hues back in 1843. Since then, they have languished in obscurity, “apparently unnoticed by contemporary biologists”. Whenever new species of wasps or flies are described, their discoverers almost never mention the coloured patterns of the wings. The visible pigments have even been described as “evolution in black and white”. It’s like walking through an art gallery with a blindfold.

Now, Ekaterina Shevtsova from Lund University has taken off the blind. By photographing several species against dark backgrounds, she has revealed a world of hidden colour, rivalling that of more obviously beautiful insects. “The claim that fly and wasp wing patterns are no match for the incredible diversity of colourful butterfly wing patterns is obsolete,” she says.

Shevtsova found that different species have their own unique patterns of swirls, spots and stripes, all shining with resplendent colour. The insects probably use their wings as billboards to communicate with one another and to distinguish between different species. Insect scientists can use the patterns for the same purpose, separating species that otherwise look identical.

Shevtsova has also worked out how the patterns are created. They are “structural colours”. They exist not because of any pigment, but because of the wing’s microscopic structures. When light hits the wing, most of it passes straight through but 20% bounces back. Some reflects off the top layer, and the rest reflects off the bottom layer after passing through the thin membrane.

The two reflected beams reinforce one another to produce a strong vivid colour. The hue that you see depends on how thick the wing is at a given point. By varying the thickness of the membrane, the insect can reflect a rainbow from its wings. This phenomenon, known as “thin film interference”, also produces the colourful patterns of oil on water.

If the wing lies on top of a white surface, the colours are completely swamped by the white light reflecting off the background. This explains why the colours are seldom mentioned – insect scientists typically study their specimens against a white board. You can only appreciate their true majesty against a coloured background. Pitch black is best because it absorbs any light that makes it through the wing, leaving only the coloured reflections visible. Green will also do – after all, that’s the colour that insects most commonly find themselves in front of.

Shevtsova calls these colours “wing interference patterns”, or WIPs, and she thinks that they’re signals aimed at other insects. For a start, these insects can’t see red and the only colour that’s not reflected by the wings just happens to be pure red. Males and females often have different patterns too, which suggests that the WIPs could be shaped by the insects’ sexual preferences.

The WIPs are also unique to different species, a fact that could be a boon to insect scientists. Small wasps and flies are hard to examine and different species often look identical. Telling them apart is a tough job and scientists need a meticulous physical check-up, a behavioural clue, or a genetic analysis. But Shevtsova thinks they could just use WIPs instead.

By studying these patterns, she managed to tell the difference between five species of wasp, three of which were new to science. At first glance, they could all be mistaken for each other, but their colourful wing patterns gave them away.

Best of all, the patterns stand the test of time. With a black backdrop, you can still see them shining from museum specimens that have been kept in drawers for 100 years. While pigments may fade, these WIPs endure because they’re produced by the very shape of the wing. And unlike the iridescent colours of many birds and butterflies, which change depending on the angle you’re looking from, the WIPs look the same from all directions.

The WIPs cast the behaviour and evolution of insects in a new light. Flies often use their wings to signal to each other during courtships, using movements that are probably accompanied by brilliant flashes of colour. As another example, female fig wasps hold their wings upright when they arrive on a fig. As they squeeze through a narrow entrance in the fruit, the wings break off and the wasp sticks them into place with a tiny drop of glue. Viewed with WIPs in mind, the wings could act as a colourful “Do Not Disturb” sign, telling other wasps that the fruit now has a tenant.

Since the colours come from the microscopic shape of the wing, every hair, bump, ridge and vein affects the pattern of the WIPs. If an insect evolves a larger, thicker wing, its colours change. If the wing gains or loses veins, the colours change. Indeed, the unseen influence of these colours could explain why the veins of some insect wings are incredibly varied, for no obvious reason. Through these changing colours, the evolution of flies and wasps may start becoming more transparent.

Northampton Saints rugby director Jim Mallinder has labelled Saturday’s LV=Cup clash against London Wasps at Franklin’s Gardens as a “big game”.

The Saints top pool four by a single point following last weekend’s round of fixtures and thus need a bonus-point victory to not just guarantee a place in the semi-finals, but also a possible home tie.

And with the Saints still smarting from last Saturday’s loss at Bath, Mallinder insists an improvement will be needed against Wasps tomorrow, a team the Saints boss says deserve respect.

“It’s a big game for us,” he said. “We started the LV= Cup well with two bonus point wins and we need to keep that momentum.

“We need to win to get through and qualify for a semi-final. We don’t want weeks off during the season; we want our holidays in the summer.

“That means we’ve got to win at the weekend, it’s as simple as that.

“Wasps will be a difficult proposition. They may be out of the tournament but they’ve still got everything to play for in terms of getting on track in the league.

“They will attack us in a number of ways and we’ve got to make sure we step up and that our defence improves a lot from last week.”

Russians to feature for Wasps

Meanwhile, Wasps are poised to hand debuts to their two new Russian recruits.

Having completed their first full week of training with the squad, both Victor Gresev and Vladislav Korshunov have been named in the match day 23 for the clash at Franklin’s Gardens.

Gresev will start at number eight, while Korshunov is set to feature from the bench.

Eighteen-year-old Nathan Morris and 19-year-old Will Robinson will also earn their first starts for the club – Morris starting at hooker and Robinson getting the nod at fly-half after performing well from the bench last weekend in his first appearance at Adams Park.

In total there are eight changes to the team that played Exeter Chiefs in last weekend’s LV=Cup game at Adams Park.

In the backs, Hugo Southwell and Richard Haughton start alongside youngster Robinson, while in the forwards, Tim Payne, Morris and Ben Broster come into the side to make up a new-look front row, with Matt Everard and Victor Gresev taking up positions in the back row.

Charlie Davies will once again captain the side.

Northampton: 15 Paul Diggin, 14 Jamie Elliott, 13 George Pisi, 12 James Downey, 11 Noah Cato, 10 Stephen Myler, 9 Martin Roberts, 8 Roger Wilson, 7 Ben Nutley, 6 Calum Clark (c), 5 Christian Day, 4 James Craig, 3 Brian Mujati, 2 Andy Long, 1 Soane Tonga’uiha.
Replacements: 16 Mike Haywood, 17 Alex Waller, 18 Tom Mercey, 19 Mark Sorenson, 20 Samu Manoa, 21 Ryan Glynn, 22 Tom May, 23 Vasily Artemyev.

Wasps: 15 Hugo Southwell, 14 Lee Robinson, 13 Alex Cheesman, 12 Chris Mayor, 11 Richard Haughton, 10 Will Robinson, 9 Charlie Davies (c), 8 Victor Gresev, 7 Matt Everard, 6 Tinus DuPlessis, 5 Ed O’Donoghue, 4 Heinz Koll, 3 Ben Broster, 2 Nathan Morris, 1 Tim Payne.
Replacements: 16 Vladislav Korshunov, 17 Bob Baker, 18 Simon McIntyre, 19 Joe Burton, 20 Sam Jones, 21 Joe Simpson, 22 Nick Robinson, 23 Charlie Ingall.

Russian rugby internationals Vladislav Korshunov and Viktor Gresev can only benefit from their recent transfer to London Wasps, national team head coach Kingsley Jones told RIA Novosti in an interview.

Korshunov and Gresev are stalwarts of the Russia team who featured in the country’s impressive World Cup debut in 2011. Korshunov, 28, plays as a hooker and is the national team captain, while 25-year-old Gresev is a No. 8 who was named Russia’s player of the year in 2009 and 2011.

They switched to Wasps from Russian club side VVA-Podmoskovye last week.

“I was delighted, to be honest,” Jones told RIA Novosti at the Russian Rugby Academy over the weekend. ” I think it’s a great experience for the two of them to be able to play in the Premiership and valuable for them to learn the culture and see what professional sport is like in the UK at a top club, although [Wasps are] struggling at the moment.”

Wasps said in a statement that the Russians would cover for more established members of the team. Gresev turned down an offer from second-tier side Nottingham to join Wasps, who are currently 11th of 12 teams in the Premiership.

“I think it’s about playing, but it’s also about the environment. [Wasps have] won European trophies, and I’ll be very surprised if [Gresev] doesn’t play much. I think he’ll play for Wasps as much as he would for Nottingham.

“And I’m good friends with David Young, so there’s more to it than just sending them to a club. I know David Young, Paul Turner, James Wade, the recruitment manager, they’re all friends, so I trust that [Korshunov and Gresev] go there and I trust that they get some rugby if they deserve it, and that they’ll be released appropriately if and when I need them.”

Jones said that he was not worried about the players being released for international duty, as this was covered by International Rugby Board regulations.

The four Russian internationals currently based in England – including Vasily Artemyev of Northampton Saints and Andrei Ostrikov of Sale Sharks – will feature in the European Nations Cup which starts on February 4, but may not play in all Russia’s games, Jones said. This would allow emerging talents at Russian clubs an opportunity to play, he added.

Harrier Lancashire & Manchester Pest Control New Areas & Websites – Harrier pest control who have traditionally covered Manchester, South Lancashire and North Cheshire have extended their area of operation for 2010 and announce a series of new partner websites.

Harrier pest control have a fixed price for wasps nest destruction during 2010 0f just £32.00 except for customers on postal codes L, CH & CW where unfortunately we have to charge £44.50 to cover increased travel but as we do not charge extra for evening or weekend callouts this still makes us very competitive with other local companies and local authority pest control operatives, some of whom charge over £50.00.

We work seven days per week and will do our best to fit in with your busy schedule and not keep you waiting in all day. If the nest is accessible without going through the house you can even pre-pay by credit or debit card and we will destroy the nest whilst you are out. If it is urgent please let us know you have paid by telephone as we only pick up our email at the end of the working day. Use the buttons below to prepay.

Stockport Pest Prevention

Stockport based Stockport Pest Prevention announce that there will be no increase in their fixed price to destroy wasps’ nests in 2009, in Trafford.

Stockport Pest Prevention will get rid of wasps’ nests for you if you live in or around Trafford, seven days per week for a fixed price of £32.00.

Wasps’ nests can often be destroyed same day, give us a call to check for availability.

It is not advisable to allow a wasps’ nest to remain untreated as in September many thousands of queens will be produced and this may then require additional cost work such as fogging the roof void or loft, but until then we charge £32.00, no add-ons.

If you have more than one wasps’ nest on the same property in Trafford we do not charge extra for the second wasps’ nest and then only £10 each for the third and subsequent nests.

Many council pest controllers in Trafford are charging £52 for the first wasps’ nest and £30 for each subsequent.

To arrange a visit call us :

Seaside pest control brings its own set of special circumstances which sometimes require a different approach to more inland towns.

Firstly the very logistics of working in a busy seaside holiday resort can be problematic, even the basics of parking your van near the customers’ premises can be difficult especially when equipment needs to be carried. This can lead to increased charges which have to be passed onto the customer.

In summer premises are often open seven days a week and even twenty-four hours a day thus leaving little opportunity for the pest controller to go about his work.

This may not cause too much difficulty in routine preventative inspection visits but can cause extreme problems when infestation is detected in that often pesticides require premises to be vacated for a period of time.

In winter the opposite situation may occur where premises are closed for several months leaving a pest infestation to develop undetected.

Seaside holiday resorts usually have a large number of takeaways providing food to eat on the go and often will be littered overnight with uneaten food scraps providing food for rats and seagulls.

Often daily waste collections mean that bagged food waste is put outside overnight thus encouraging rodents.

Seagulls are obviously a nuisance with their noise and fouling but often will take food stuffs up onto roofs and ledges causing a build up of rotten materials which produce flies and maggots.

Perhaps the most difficult aspect of seaside pest control is the resurgence of the bed bug which in recent years has seen numbers rise exponentially.

A high transient population of holiday makers often staying in inexpensive, high turnover accommodation means that the bugs can spread quickly throughout a resort and even expensive upmarket establishments are not exempt.

The very nature of a bed bug infestation means that it is difficult and expensive to cure and news of infestation is often of interest to local press who will often carry a story about a guest being bitten, thus ruining the reputation of the establishment.

Bed bug infestations require that the infested bedroom and those adjacent be treated thus losing revenue for the establishment.

A hotel or guest house could also find themselves liable for the cost of dealing with an infestation at the homes of their guests as the bugs are easily transported in luggage.

Premises are often open seven days a week and even twenty-four hours a day thus leaving little opportunity for the pest controller to go about his work.

This may not cause too much difficulty in routine preventative inspection visits but can cause extreme problems when infestation is detected in that often pesticides require premises to be vacated for a period of time.

Big towns & cities usually have a large number of takeaways providing food to eat on the go and often will be littered overnight with uneaten food scraps providing food for rats, pigeons and seagulls which have now moved inland.

Often daily waste collections mean that bagged food waste is put outside overnight thus encouraging rodents.

Pigeons & Seagulls are obviously a nuisance with their noise and fouling but often will take food stuffs up onto roofs and ledges causing a build up of rotten materials which produce flies and maggots.

Pigeons will often roost and nest in roof spaces for many years leading to a large build up of pigeon guano and often their droppings can make the walkways below slippery and dangerous.

Most big cities have a varied ethnic mix with a variety of shops and restaurants supplying foods from all over the world. Often these foods are imported in bulk from countries where pests such as cockroaches are endemic and these pests are then brought into the U.K. hidden away in the goods and packaging.

Perhaps the most difficult aspect of big city pest control is the resurgence of the bed bug which in recent years has seen numbers rise exponentially.

A high transient population of visitors often staying in inexpensive, high turnover accommodation means that the bugs can spread quickly throughout a city and even expensive upmarket establishments are not exempt.

Welcome to Harrier Pest Prevention dealing with all types of pest control in Manchester, Lancashire and Cheshire. We are available to help seven days per week on 0800 019 8382 or 01257 230637.

How Much Does a Pest Control Company Cost? – That’s a very difficult question to consider. It’s a little bit like ringing a mechanic and asking him how much to fix your car without being able to see it and diagnose the problem, virtually impossible to do.

Some jobs are pretty straightforward and here at Harrier Pest Prevention we are happy to give a fixed price on wasps’ nests but virtually every other pest problem will require a no obligation, free of charge site visit.

I would indeed be wary of any pest control company that are prepared to give prices without a site survey as this may indicate that they are not carrying out correct risk-assessments and are not mindful of the safety of you, your children and your pets.

For your no obligation site visit in Lancashire, Cheshire or Greater Manchester contact Harrier Pest Prevention or phone 0800 019 8382.
